The Do-Over by Bethany Turner

 Book Excerpt:

Sometimes dreams come true. Other times, the best outcome begins with an epic fail.

Career-driven McKenna Keaton has devoted her life to attaining the senior partnership at her law firm. So asking a man on a date should be nothing. But the past four days have been the worst of her life and have called everything she thought she knew about herself into question. Besides, she can't remember her last actual date—one that didn't involve using a blind date as an opportunity to get a stranger's perspective on effective cross-examination techniques. (It's like sharing fondue with a jury!)

But a real date? And with shy, nerdy Henry Blumenthal—McKenna's high school rival for valedictorian who once took three hours to beat her at chess? Scratch that. He's Hank Blume now, the famed documentarian, Durham's darling son, who has attained all his dreams and more. But, unfortunately, he also happens to look like he stepped out of an Eddie Bauer catalog.

Whereas McKenna is a disgraced workaholic from New York on unpaid leave, accused of a white-collar crime she would never commit, succumbing to panic attacks, watching her dreams unravel. At age thirty-eight—and destined by the family curse to die before she turns forty—it's absolutely the wrong time to have a major crush on a man. Especially one who treasures his memories of McKenna as the Girl Most Likely to Succeed.

"Pitch-perfect comedic timing, a relatable heroine, and a refreshing sweetness elevate this novel above the sea of modern rom-com. The rare author who can make me laugh-out-loud, The Do-Over is Bethany Turner at her best." —Lauren Layne, New York Times bestselling author.

"Bethany Turner has crafted a delightful, witty story with zippy dialogue, warmly relatable characters, and hilariously apt pop culture references. I found myself sneaking off to read just one more chapter. I'm still smiling, thinking about this book. Reading it felt like eating a big bowl of Lucky Charms mixed with Fruity Pebbles. A colorful explosion of happiness." —Rachel Linden, bestselling author of The Enlightenment of Bees."

"The Do-Over" by Bethany Turner
My Assessment:

'The Do-Over' presented a slow start in the beginning. Still, it did pick up, giving the reader an exciting and enjoyable read about the lives of McKenna Keaton and Henry Blumenthal by the end of the story. These two had been childhood schoolmates' friends and had grown apart after growing up. McKenna displayed some downright negativism in how she handled her life, especially when it came to her family in North Carolina and not being honest with them after her return.

On the other side of the scale, Henry was likable as he comes into the story...with a name change [now Hank Blume] and with a fascinating job of being an acclaimed documentarian who had liked McKenna in HS. So, we have two opposites that will come together and give the reader an exciting read.

The author also gives the reader some very well-developed secondary, well-defined, and even adorable secondary characters that add so much to the story. How will the story play out as McKenna has returned home in NC because her powerful attorney had been accused of embezzlement over $300,000 from her job in New York? What was going on in the relationship with the Keatons...especially with the sisters and the mom? And how will Henry come into all of this as the situation plays out? The reader will have to pick up this good read and see how well this author brings it all out to get it all. However, in the end, it seems like the story was somewhat cut short, but all in all, it was a good read.

Lawn Darts & Lemonade: Tackling the '80s by Steven Manchester

 Book Excerpt:

"From New England's Storyteller, Steven Manchester comes the nostalgia-filled sequel to Bread Bags & Bullies, a novel about growing up in a whacky family during the 1980s. Boomboxes, leg warmers, and Rubik's Cubes—it's all there. A hysterical walk down memory lane!

"Steven Manchester's Lawn Darts & Lemonade is so much fun, filled with laughter, tears, and Big Hair." – Taylor Dayne, '80s Recording Artist, Love Will Lead You Back.

It's the summer of 1984, a season of dodging lawn darts and chugging lemonade—or at least the discolored tap water Ma tried to disguise as lemonade.

Growing up is never easy, no matter what era you do it in. For generations, teenagers have suffered peer pressure, bullying, fear of rejection, and a sadistic obstacle course of one unexpected challenge after the next. Three brothers, Wally, Herbie, and Cockroach, learn that the past can be filled with questions—even shame and regret—while the future might be shrouded in worry and fear. But staying in the moment, now that's where the sweet spot is."

"Lawn Darts & Lemonade" By Steven Manchester

My Assessment:

My, my, all I can say about this author's 'Lawn Darts & Lemonade' was that the story was well-written, warm, funny, and relatable to the years of the '80s. It was definitely 'the summer of 1984, a season of dodging lawn darts and chugging lemonade-or least the discolored tap water Ma tried to disguise as lemonade.' Growing up in this family ... the Mom, Dad, three brothers, Walley, Herbie, and Cockroach, really went through a lot... 'learning that the past can be filled with questions-even, shame, and regret-while the future might be shrouded in worry and fear.' But when it's all said and done, it was 'where the sweet spot is.' Oh, two sisters [Louann & Lynn] came later but were also there and loved very much by their family.

It was so much fun reading how this family persevered during this time in the '80s, as the story strolls down memory lane, doing all of this family loved during this coming-of-age time and survived it all. It was fun listening to what Pop had them doing during this two-week vacation.

The story made it clear that Mom smoked; Herbie showed how much he loved the shake of his Magic 8 Ball for questions he needed answered; the two other brothers had their way of having the reader shake their heads and say now what was that? But above everything, the Mom and Dad showed they loved their children very much. Also, some relatives [Uncle Skinny and Aunt Phyllis] were in the story that showed they cared too.

The story was so well delivered, showing how Herbie took us on a journey down memory lane after the death of his Pop. However, what left me in tears was the ending and the Poem this author had for the Mom. "Everything that I am, everything that I achieve, is because the Lord blessed me with your love."

My Assessment:

'I Carry Your Heart' was quite a read, and by the end of the story, I was in tears after all was said and done. The story has an explanation that will give the reader a better understanding of Abby's and Theo's relationship. Was this the right thing for these two to do as they did? Well, that depends on how well one can define, right? However, if things had worked out as Abby had planned by the end of her life, maybe things would have worked out differently for the two. Oh well, we can only deal with what did happen, and from all that had gone on, things did...well, I will stop here and say you will have to pick up this excellent read and see how well the author brings it all out to the reader.

I loved this quote:

My Assessment:

Amanda Stoll has returned to Twin Peaks after being gone for twenty years and working at a law office with two other lawyers, Rebecca and Harriett. So why did Amanda return after all of this time? It had something to do with her brother Harry which seemed to be a pain in the..., however, she loved him. And it looks like she is needed as it looks like her cousin Laura is being charged with terrorism. How will all of this work out for Amanda? Also, it seems she has an ex-boyfriend that does take no for an answer.

As Amanda continues to work on the case, she will find out a lot about this town she had grown up in and that what things were not as it seemed for what was going on in this corrupt system that involved a judge, along with some in the police department and who else that went along in all of this chaos. Will Amanda be able to break this all down and get her cousin acquitted? How will all of this corruption come out? Well, you will have to pick up this good read and see for yourself how well this author brings it all out.

Also, it seemed that her brother Harry was into something criminal that was not right in what he was doing and who he was dealing with in this position. Will Amanda be able to help him get out of that situation?

Be ready for an exciting read of how this story showed the importance of family and what happens when corruption hits the town. There will also be an extended epilogue that does add to complete the story.

The Nantucket Beachfront Inn" by Ainsley Keaton

My Opinion:

'The Nantucket Beachfront Inn' was quite a story of how 54-year-old Ava Flynn had been a Manhatten Lawyer. It seems as though Ava's life was going badly for her... as her first husband dies, leaving her with three children, her second husband leave-taking money from her, then losing her job. However, Ava gets a life-changing gift when a former client bequeathed her a large mansion in Nantucket. That did give her a fresh start where she would pick up her life and start a new endeavor as a Nantucket inn owner. Ava's two best friends, Quinn and Hallie, come with her and help her move in as she decides to make this mansion into bed and breakfast. There will be many issues along this journey.

As the story continues, Ava's three children will appear, which will bring some havoc with them in one form or another. One of the daughters is not getting along with her husband and has come with her daughter...[the granddaughter] to stay at the mansion. Ava's sons me from the L.A. area to help her move. Ava's mom [Sairse] I in the picture too. Oh, and by the end o the story, the second child Sam comes into the picture. Just one powerful family dynamic will come into play and have one shake their heads.

Along with all of that, there will be a healing witch that will come into the story. So now I will stop here, and you will have to pick up the good read and see how well the author brings it all out to the reader.

There will be many characters that will come in the story to fit this all together. So be ready for a read that will have a lot going on that you will have to keep up. Some you will like more than some others!

Be ready for a story that isn't only about Ava, her inheritance, her friends, family, and healing witch, but will leave us wanting more as the story end in a cliffhanger where we will be left wanting more. From whom will this be?... Deacon, Samantha, Quinn, Jackson all lay at the feet of Ava.

Thank NetGalley, the publisher, and the author for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

The Unsinkable Greta James by Jennifer E. Smith

 Book Excerpt:

"An indie musician reeling from tragedy and a public breakdown reconnects with her father on a weeklong cruise in "a pitch-perfect story about the ways we recover love in the strangest places" (Rebecca Serle, bestselling author of In Five Years)

"The characters are drawn with a generosity that allows them to be wrong but also right, loving but also prone to missteps, and ultimately deserving of a resolution that's full of hope."—Linda Holmes, New York Times bestselling author of Evvie Drake Starts Over.

ONE OF THE MOST ANTICIPATED BOOKS OF 2022—BookPage

Right after the sudden death of her mother—her first and most devoted fan—and just before the launch of her high-stakes sophomore album, Greta James falls apart on stage. The footage quickly goes viral, and she stops playing, her career suddenly in jeopardy—the kind of jeopardy her father, Conrad, has always predicted; the kind he warned her about when he urged her to make more practical choices with her life.

Months later, Greta—still heartbroken and very much adrift—reluctantly agrees to accompany Conrad on the Alaskan cruise her parents had booked to celebrate their fortieth anniversary. It could be their last chance to heal old wounds in the wake of shared loss. But the trip will also prove to be a voyage of discovery for them both, and for Ben Wilder, a charming historian, onboard to lecture about The Call of the Wild, who is struggling with a major upheaval in his own life. As Greta works to build back her confidence and Ben confronts an uncertain future, they find themselves drawn to and relying on each other.

It's here in this unlikeliest of places—at sea, far from the packed city venues where she usually plays and surrounded by the stunning scenery of Alaska—Greta will finally confront the choices she's made, the heartbreak she's suffered, and the family hurts that run deep. In the end, she'll have to decide what her path forward might look like—and how to find her voice again."

"The Unsinkable Greta James" by Jennifer E. Smith,

My Assessment:

'The Unsinkable Greta' was a good read giving the reader quite a bit to think about long after the read. It was pretty interesting how the brother could get his sister and father together on this ship, with each thinking that the other wanted the other to be on this cruise. The characters were also very well-developed and defined, giving the reader exciting touches as the story played out. The description of Alaska on this tour was simply beautiful in all of the places shared with the reader. The story was well delivered of a female rock star who dealt with her mother's death and a relationship that was quite tough dealing with her father while on this Alaskan cruise. Will these two be able to see eye to eye about how their life had gone so weirdly? To find out how this story will turn out for Greta James, her father, someone else who comes into this story, you will have to pick up this good read to find out what this author has in store for the reader. Would I recommend it? YES!

A Brush with Love A Novel by Mazey Eddings

 Book Excerpt:

"Nine out of ten dentists agree, Mazey Eddings's rom-com A Brush with Love makes your smile brighter!*

*not scientifically proven

Harper is anxiously awaiting placement into a top oral surgery residency program when she crashes (literally) into Dan. Harper would rather endure a Novocain-free root canal than face any distractions, even one this adorable. A first-year dental student with a family legacy to contend with, Dan doesn’t have the same passion for pulling teeth that Harper does. Though he finds himself falling for her, he is willing to play by Harper’s rules. So with the greatest of intentions and the poorest of follow-throughs, the two set out to be “just friends.” But as they get to know each other better, Harper fears that trading fillings for feelings may make her lose control and can't risk her carefully ordered life coming undone, no matter how drool-worthy Dan is.

Blood, gore, and extra-long roots? No problem. The idea of falling in love? Torture.

My Assessment:

"A Brush With Love" featuring Harper and Dan was quite a cute read. Both of these two had problems. But were they fixable problems? I got upset with the heroine several times due to her naiveness in life. The story was rather long, so the reader will have to keep up with what is going on; however, the chapters are named, which did help. The story gives the reader a realistic look at how things can go, especially general anxiety. I loved the hero, Dan, but when it came time to leave, he did the best thing that he needed to do...fix his problems. The dentistry setting for the story was right on the line of what all goes on in the person pursuing dentistry. Would I recommend this read? Yes!
